founders, don't go it alone

From the outside, building a CPG brand looks exciting: new product launches, retail wins, growing buzz. On the inside, it can be a different story: Late nights staring at inventory levels; second-guessing pricing decisions; trying to decode retailer feedback that’s vague at best (and contradictory at worst.) It’s the constant pressure of knowing that every decision, big or small, has real consequences for their business. Founders are full of ideas, ambition, and work ethic. They muscled their way from a great idea to launch. That’s a feat in and of itself. They over-index on early wins and assume the path is working. They chase opportunities that look good on the surface but don’t align with a long-term strategy. And they often react too quickly when things start to wobble. The Cost of Going It Alone In CPG, mistakes are expensive and they’re often hard to unwind. Maybe a founder overproduced inventory because demand felt strong, (until it isn’t.) Maybe they expanded into retail too early and can’t support velocity. Perhaps they mispriced a product line that eroded margins before they realize it. And then there’s the common investment in the wrong channels, which can easily burn through cash without meaningful return. Individually, these feel like normal learning curves. Collectively, they can stall or even sink a business. And beyond the financial cost, there’s a personal one. Decision fatigue sets in. Confidence starts to erode. Every choice feels heavier than the last. Because there’s no one there to pressure-test thinking before action, founders fall in a spiral that is often hard to swim out of. These founders are not bad operators. They’re just operating without perspective. The Hidden Reality: You Need a True Sounding Board Oftentimes, founders make decisions alone, or the support around them falls short when it matters most. Family and friends are supportive, but they don’t know the rules of the game. They don’t understand retail margins, trade spend, velocity targets, or the cash demands of scaling a physical product. Their advice, while well-meaning, isn’t actionable. Consultants and advisors can be helpful, but many operate at arm’s length. They provide recommendations, decks, and frameworks—but they’re not living with the consequences of those decisions. And too often, they tell founders what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear. Other founders can be a great resource, but their experience doesn’t always translate. Different category, different stage, different challenges. What worked for them might not work for another business. This leaves founders surrounded by input but still lacking clarity. What founders often lack is a trusted, experienced sounding board – a person or a team who understands the specific challenges of building a consumer brand and who can help them navigate the road ahead. In CPG, context matters. Pattern recognition matters. And without it, even smart decisions can lead the most adept founder in the wrong direction. Founders Need More Than Advice What most founders need isn’t more advice. They need better partnership. They need someone who can look at their business objectively and say, “Here’s what’s working, here’s what isn’t, and here’s what I’d do next.” They need someone who has seen the patterns before and who understands how small decisions today impact outcomes six months from now. They also need someone who will challenge them when they’re off track, not just validate their instincts. They need more than a sidelines view. They need a strategic roadmap AND help executing the plan. Not a consultant. Not an investor. A true operating partner. Second Seat Partners: Your Copilot That’s exactly why we built Second Seat Partners. We believe founders shouldn’t have to carry the full weight of decision-making on their own. And we believe the best outcomes come from having the right person in the second seat—someone fully engaged, fully honest, and fully invested in winning. This is not about surface-level advice or polished presentations. This is about:• Pressure-testing strategies before the cost is too high• Making the hard calls that they have been avoiding • Bringing clarity to where to focus, and where not to (right now) • Rolling up the sleeves and helping execute You’re Still Driving—But You’re Not Alone At the end of the day, a founder should still be in the driver seat (until they’re ready to hand over the wheel). But a founder shouldn’t be navigating alone. With the right copilot, decisions get clearer. Mistakes get fewer. Progress gets faster. And maybe just as importantly—the weight gets lighter. The most successful founders aren’t the ones who do everything themselves. They’re the ones who know where they need help—and bring in the right people early. After all, we’re all only as good as the people we choose to surround ourselves with. Second Seat Partners exists to sit alongside you—not behind you and not above you. We’re battle-tested and focused on building brands and businesses that are primed to win the marathon. If you think we can be of help, let’s talk. Until then, we wish you great luck and success on your journey.
